Biography

Notables Project
John Grimshaw is Notable.

One of the most notable Victorian English painters.

John Atkinson Grimshaw was born on 6 Sep in 1836, the son of David Grimshaw and Mary Atkinson. [1]He was christened on 11 December 1836 in Oxford Place, formerly the Albion Street Wesleyen Church in Leeds, York, England. [2]

In 1841, the same year as his younger brother Jonathan was born, John's family were living in Little Bolland's Court, Queen St Leeds. The family consisted of his parents David and Mary and the two boys John and Jonathan. [3]

By 1851, the family had moved to Brunswick Row in Leeds and John, aged 14, was working as a Railway Clerk. [4] The family had grown to include three more sons: David, Richard and Josiah.

In 1857, John married his cousin, Frances Theodosia Hubbarde in Leeds. [5]

In 1861 John, still working as a railway clerk, lived with his wife and his younger brother Jonathan at Wilkes St, Wortley, now an inner city area of Leeds. [6]

By 1871 their family had grown to include children Clara, Arthur, Enid, Gertrude and Louis. Several other children had been born and died as infants. John had clearly given up other paid forms of work and was described in the census as "artist". [7] The family address was Knostrope Old Hall, a fine old home built in the 17th century by Adam Baynes MP in area of Leeds close by the River Aire. Knostrope Hall was the subject of several paintings by Grimshaw. [8]

In 1881, there were 8 children living at home with their parents and two servants living in. [9]

John died at Knostrope Hall aged 57 on 31 October 1893 and his death was registered in the Leeds District, in the last quarter of 1893. [10] He was buried on 4 Nov 1893 in the Woodhouse Cemetery at Leeds [11] where he is commemorated with a Blue Plaque. [12] His will was probated to his widow Frances on 10 Jan 1894. [13]

Research Notes

There are two entries for John Grimshaw in the 1891 census. One is with his family at Knostrope Hall [14] and the other is for himself, with three female servants at Gloucester Rd, Birkdale in Lancashire.[15] Both entries describe him as Artist RA Exhibitor.
