Biography

Johannes Vermeer is a world-renowned Dutch-Baroque painter who specialized in scenes of middle-class indoor life and his use of light in his work.[1]

Joannis Reijniersz (Vermeer) was baptized in Delft on 31 October 1632 as son of Reijnier Jansz. (Vos) and Digna Balthazars

Jan was an avid art collector and dealer. He never traveled, though, and performed his collecting close to home.[1]

Despite his modern popularity, during his lifetime, he was not as well regarded, so much so that his family was left in debt upon his death.[1]

He was buried in the Oude Kerk (Old Church) in Delft.[3]
